5 Things to Remember When You Start Chasing Your Dreams

If you’re anything like me, you have a long bucket-list of things you want to scratch off. Or maybe you don’t because it seems too crazy or impossible for anything “big” to happen in your life. Maybe you’ve been thinking about chasing your dreams for a while but you’re too scared to make the move, or simply don’t know where to start.

Deciding to go after that certain something is a small, yet quite possibly the biggest, step you will take on your path to achievement. It can be scary, tough, and overwhelming. But if you remember these 5 things along the way, your leap of faith may be the best decision you’ve ever made.

Mindset is everything. I’m sure you’ve heard it before. It sounds all great and dandy but have you actually put it into practice? Positive thinking has a HUGE impact on your life, days, and moments. Think about it. Have you ever woke up on the wrong side of the bed and ended up having a “bad day?” That’s because you never took control of your mindset. If you feel yourself falling into the downward spiral of negativity, do something that you know will make you happy. Read something positive, do something nice for someone else, or simply go for a walk. If all else fails, laugh. It’s the best remedy.

Self-fulfilling prophecy. The ones who believe something great will happen will actually make something great happen. The ones who think life is out to get them, well…they’ll continue on with their pity party. You have to believe in yourself no matter what the world is telling you. If you let the negative opinions of others influence you to believe the same, you are sure to give up.

Write it down and break it down. Things sound a whole lot scarier in your head until you write it down. And even then, it might still sound just as scary. But the key here is writing down the “little” goals that will lead you to your “big” goal. In other words, what short-term actions will lead you to your big dream? I’m talking daily, weekly, monthly, yearly goals. No matter what your goal may be, breaking it down helps turn the seemingly impossible into possible.

It’s not enough just to dream. You have to actually do something. The best way to stop simply dreaming and start doing is to hold yourself accountable. Many of us have tendencies to go about our days depending on how we feel. You may feel “out of it” or you didn’t get a lot of sleep that night. Of course you need to listen to your body if you seriously need a break. But all too often we act on how we “feel” that day. As I like to say, do something today your future self will thank you for.

Growth always involves a change. Not sure what direction to go in? Yep, I’ve been there. Some days I still feel there. You know you want a little more out of life but not sure what that looks like. The solution? Start trying new things. Anything. And while you’re at it, meet new people. The best way to stir up passion is to change your perspective. And that won’t come by living in the same routine you’ve always had. Step out of your comfort zone, have an open mind, and follow your intuition. If it feels right, keep doing it! And trust that opportunities will start to open for you.

So what steps will you take TODAY to get started? Still not sure? Take a deeeeeep breath. Or a few. And be gentle with yourself. The very tinniest step is still a step, just make sure you keep moving.
